Youth Programs

We run a number of ongoing programs for youth that provide support, build skills, and prepare participants for challenges they may face within the criminal justice system or in the community.

Extrajudicial Measures and Sanctions:

supervision of extrajudicial measures and sanctions for youth in Peterborough City and County.

As an alternative to being charged or serving time in custody, youth involved in minor offenses may be required to complete certain actions, such as paying the victim back, doing community work, attending a course on anger management, or restorative justice conferencing.

Our staff oversees these extrajudicial measures and sanctions, ensuring that they are completed and reporting back to police or the courts.

Restorative Justice Conferencing:

a process in which all individuals affected by a crime meet to discuss the offence and its consequences.

Our staff and volunteers facilitate restorative justice circles in Peterborough, under the direction of a Youth Justice Committee. The process gives all parties — including the offender, the victims, and other members of the community — a chance to air their feelings about the offence. The group then comes up with an appropriate way for the young person to repair the harm.

SAFE:

a pre-employment training program for youths aged 15 to 30.

Offered in partnership with the Peterborough Youth Emergency Shelter and Employment Planning and Counselling, this six-month, group program focuses on employment skills, team work, problem-solving, communication and practical work experience for youth.

The Woodshop:

an evening program for youth to obtain practical skills in woodworking.

This six-week evening program allows young people to develop new skills in a safe and welcoming environment. Participants attend two evenings a week, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Programs for both young men and young women are available.

Youth Court Support:

support for accused youth and their families.

Our youth court support worker is present at youth court each week to provide information and support to young persons and families involved with the youth justice system.
