Greening the Non-Profit Sector

That's what we are trying to do here at the John Howard Society of Peterborough.

Funded by the Ministry of Energy and working closely with Peterborough Green-Up, we are striving to help non-profit agencies in our community make positive environmental changes in their workplace. As a United Way member, we want to do our part as a socially responsible agency, but also want to help other agencies to develop a culture of conservation in their own workplaces.

How To Make It Happen

Starting a compost or improving recycling programs are easy and cheap ways to get started. However, there's even more that can be done! For example, there's a program delivered locally by Peterborough Green-Up and offered by Ontario Power Authority and Peterborough Distribution Inc. called Power Saving Blitz. This program gives local businesses up to $1000 towards energy retrofits.

For additional information on the PSB program or other local incentive programs see our Fact Sheet.

Greening Training

We've created a greening volunteer training package which aimss to develop a culture of conservation in your agency.

The training package can be used by your greening team to train and educate staff members and/or clients. We have provided a lesson plan as well as additional documents and supporting information to help supplement and direct the training.

Items covered include doing an energy audit of your agency, potential greening recommendations as well as a general understanding of some of the issues.

The training materials include:
