Adult Programs

At the John Howard Society of Peterborough, we offer a range of services for adults, providing support, building skills, and preparing participants for the challenges they may face within the community.

Community Intake and Aftercare:

advice and referrals for individuals in need of support.

Our staff and volunteers are available to work one-to-one with individuals in need to help with finding housing or work, pursuing training or education, completing post-release requirements, or adjusting to community life.

Institutional Services:

support, advocacy and advice for men at Warkworth Institution.

Our staff assists inmates at Warkworth Institution with pre-release planning by providing information on housing, employment, education, counselling and other services. John Howard Society Staff are at Warkworth Institution every other Tuesday. We accept collect calls from prison.

Partner Assault Response (PAR):

a program for men and women that focuses on the root causes of partner assault and its effects on both spouses and children.

In this 16-week group program, our staff uses structured exercises to help participants gain an understanding of their own beliefs and behaviours, learn techniques for defusing violence and abuse before it occurs, and focus on the characteristics of healthy relationships. The goal of the PAR program is increased safety for partners and increased accountability on the part of offenders.

Healing from Within

"Approximately one in six boys is sexually abused before the age of 16."
(Lynne MacDonnel-OPP Abuse Awareness)

It is clear that there are potentially significant long term physical and mental health consequences to childhood sexual abuse. The individual who is a child sexual abuse victim will access health services more frequently than their non-abused counter parts, they will demonstrate varying levels of depression and anxiety and they will have difficulty in maintaining relationships. All of these problems are exacerbated if there is not an appropriate level of support when they choose to self-disclose. The severity of the consequences is in part directly related to the amount of support available. Given that it may be even more difficult for men to disclose than it is for women, that level of support available may even be more critical.
